Getting to Sen Monorom, Mondulkiri - The Complete Travel Guide

Transportation options from / to Phnom Penh :

Public Buses:
Usually takes between 6 – 7.5 hours to cover, depending on traffic and bus condition.
Bus is the best budget option, you will have your own seat. But it is slower then other transport options, the buses quite often break down as they struggle up the hills of Mondulkiri.

Official ticket price: R 35000 ( $ 8.75 ) price is higher on public holidays and from tour agencies.

shared taxi / van :

Usually takes between 5.5 - 6 hours.
Daily shared taxies ( Toyota Camry )  and vans leave from Phnom Penh between 7 – 8 am. The Mondulkiri taxi station is on street #70 ( see map on the right ).
Cost: Seats are at the around R 35,000 – 40,000

Remember that in Cambodia , it's considered normal to share the front seat between 2 passengers and the back seat between 4 passengers. If you need some more room for yourself in a shared van or taxi, you can buy out an extra seat (e.g. buy 4 seats for 3 passengers)

Private Taxies and vans are the fastest and most convenient way to get to Mondulkiri. Toyota Camry can be charted for $80. A 10 seat van is $ 120 including a pick up from your doorstep. Driving guide :
The road from Phnom Penh to Sen Monorom, Mondulkiri
Exit Phnom Penh north, across the Japnese friendship bridge, begin driving north on highway 7. From there you have two options, the new shortest route: Turn right across the new bridge, about 30 km from Phnom Penh, take Highway 8 across Prey Veng province. the road exits back to highway 7 just before Meamot district.
Stay on  highway 7 until you reach Snoul. From there, turn right to Mondulkiri Highway 76 in

Travel problems you may have along the way:
 1. Tourist touts
When getting of the bus in Mondulkiri or elsewhere Cambodia, tourist touts will wait at the bus stop, sometimes even on the bus, offering accommodation and other services.
These touts do not have your best interest in mind, they usually bring you to a guest house that pays them a daily commission.. We recommended skipping anyone who is trying to offer \ sell you something as soon as you step off the bus - especially if they're offering free rides etc', It's better to take a regular moto to your destination.

2. Naughty guides
This apllies mostly to female travelers - There have been cases of minor sexual harassment by freelancing trekking guides.
To avoid this - Book your tours at your guest house or agency / office and not on the street.
If your guide says or does anything that makes you uncomfortable - Tell him immediately you are not happy with it. Report the incident when you return.

From Mondulkiri to Siam Riep

It is possible to travel from Sen Monorom to Siam Riep in one day Duration: 7 30 am - 6 pm. You need to get off at the junction in Skun and then catch another bus going to Siam Riep. Both bus companies sell direct tickets to Siam Reap, they will arrange the transit at Skun for you.

From Kratie To Mondulkiri
There are several shared vans buses leaving daily from Kratie to Sen Monorom at 8 AM, Some days there is a noon bus at 12. Usually take 3.5 - 4 hours, seats are R 30.000.

From Ratanakiri To Mondulkiri

By bus:

If you can't buy a direct ticket, take the bus from Ratanakiri to Phnom Penh, get off at a town called Snoul and catch the Mondulkiri bus there.

The jungle route:

The road from Ban Lung continues south until Lumpat district, from there to Koh Niek it is basically just a path in the jungle. This route is very popular with motocross bikers.
It is  possible to hire moto drivers to do this route, it's takes a whole day and the drivers usually charge around US 50-60.
